HOW MARTIAL ARTS HELP CHILDREN

Martial Arts are especially helpful for children with behavioral problems. Involving them in a discipline such as martial arts is a good way of using energy and works to instill concepts such as self- awareness, self respect and responsibility. However, that is not to say that only ‘problem’ children can benefit. Children who are shy and not forthcoming, benefit from the courage that it can create. It is a good way of socialising with other young people whilst learning valuable skills.

To fully participate children must practice techniques continuously and to understand the principles behind them. They must practice regularly to improve and keep up with their class mates. This in turn increases discipline and responsibility.

I believe that a martial art such as Wing Chun can help children to focus and ultimately perform at a higher level academically.

In my many years of teaching I have not come across children who practice a martial art becoming involved in gangs, fighting and creating other social nuisances. I am aware of several children who have entered into a martial art in order to avoid problem behaviour.

I am increasingly aware of the difficulties that children and young people in today’s society can encounter. It seems that not a day goes past without hearing in the news and other press that yet another child has become involved with, or a victim of a crime.

I strongly believe that a martial art such as Wing Chun is a good way of diverting children away from many of the problems they may otherwise encounter.

Many parents of the children and young people I teach have commented that they have seen vast improvements in behaviour, confidence and academic achievement. This led me to devise a programme that could be taught in schools and community centres and emphasised the positive attributes that Wing Chun can bring out in children and young people. I call this programme the Wing Chun Warriors and it has been greatly received in the schools and community centres where the programme has been run.
