Wing Chun And The Troubled Teenager

As a parent who’s son has the condition of Dyslexia I have found a means to help my son overcome some of the difficulties associated with it. While i don’t claim this is a cure, it is however a very useful tool in aiding a parent and my son in helping to cope with Dyslexia.

There are many different types of Dyslexia as i understand it, but the outcome seems to be the same irrespective of the type of Dyslexia the individual may have, in that they are viewed as disruptive/trouble makers or considered to be just lazy. This is far from the case, however the end result for the individual is the same; the individual has low self esteem and confidence in themselves. This is in part attributed to westernised culture where academic success determines a child’s confidence and self esteem.

The type of Dyslexia my son has is Organisational Dyslexia as well as mild word blindness. The idea that art and drama can help someone who is Dyslexic interested me as this seemed very practical or so i thought. Drama was not something that seemed to interest my son so i had to look for alternative. I myself am a practitioner of the art of Wing Chun so i did not have to look far for my solution. Let’s face it most teenage boys like watching/participating in one form of sport or another.

So how does Wing Chun help?
Because Wing Chun is visual there seems to be no confusion for the brain (I see I do I understand I remember) this seems to result in any information being learnt in this style being easily recalled (like tying a shoelace; learn it once and you never forget it). This is due to visual learning as i understand it. The result is an increase in self confidence and self esteem which seems to flow into the other aspects of his life giving him a greater sense of who he is and what he can achieve in life.
It is extremely rewarding to see my son showing such confidence in himself. I feel a great sense of relief in knowing that the future of my son is a step closer to being a secure and fruitful one.
